T-MAC’S TAKE
I’M BACK, YES I’M BACK
By James ‘Trey’ McCray

From the mind of Trey McCray …
Ok … time to explain where I have been for the past few weeks. I was in seclusion, hiding, hibernation, solitude, and any other type of hiding-type word you can think of. I was in DUNK REHAB and it was a one-month program and I just got out.

Why was I in dunk rehab you ask? … Listen up! … Long story …

So, Northern Region DigitalSports are the official sponsors of the Virginia Northern Region girls’ and boys’ all-star games.

With that said, I was allowed the opportunity to turn into my alter ego, a man that goes by the name of … *drum roll please* DR. DUNK.

Dr. Dunk –as seen on the picture– is a mythical character of mine that puts on the greatest exhibition of dunking you have ever HEARD of.

So, I had to perform at the all-star game in skits … and I did that … but I had to prepare my mind, my body, and my soul to do this, so I disappeared from blogging for the first couple of weeks.

“The daily pressures of the blog were too great,” I was quoted as saying to SMAC content manager Andy States. “The fans’ demands of my time, at that time, were too considerable.”

” … He was just being a punk,” Dr. Dunk said about me.

From the mind of Dr. Dunk …
So it was time to perform and the school wo-wo-wo-wouldn’t cut the lights for my performance.

They expected me to go out there and perform without a spotlight on my. I am Dr. Dunk … the man, the myth, the legend.

How can you expect a man to dunk with the lights on full blast in the gym, what kind of nonsense is that?

I AM DR. DUNK. Pronounce it with me … D-R-D-U-N-K, you get me??

I mean … I mean … I mean they cut the lights off to introduce the players … but not for me … me … me? (and STOP laughing at my stutter)

From the mind of Trey McCray …
Yeah, so needless to say, I didn’t dunk, and eventually I was beaten and robbed of my cape by a young whipper-snapper who went out and showed me up, and hurt my pride and feelings. So into the DS Dunking Rehab Center I went.

By James A. McCray III
Prince George’s County, Content Editor

In the playoffs, there are no easy wins. No free passes to the next round are given out and, in essence, a team will have to earn its eventual win and advancement.

Exhibit A, the McDonough Lady Rams‘ 48-35 victory over the visiting Central Lady Falcons.

For three quarters of Saturday’s 2A South opening-round contest, the Lady Rams held a more than comfortable lead, up to as many as 19 points late in the third quarter.

However, Central opened the fourth quarter on an 11-1 run to cut the lead down to six, 31-25, with 5 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in the game.

“For the first three quarters I thought the team did what I wanted them to do,” McDonough head coach Brenda Tillotson said. ” .. I knew [Central] had two very explosive offensive threats, so we put in a defense that we thought would work well against them, and it did for three quarters.”

However, even as Central seemed to gain all of the momentum needed for a come-from-behind victory, McDonough’s Trinity Johnson scored on two consecutive break-away lay-up baskets –one a full-court length in-bounds pass– to push the lead back to double digits, where it would remain for the remainder of the game.

“I thought they weren’t going to go in,” Johnson said of her lay-up baskets. “Luckily, I got them, because usually it doesn’t work. But this time, they worked.”

Johnson finished with a team-high 16 points, but no points meant more than the four she scored in the critical moments of the fourth.

“I think we were a little flustered with the press,” Tillotson said of the fourth period. ” … It was hard to play through that, but I am glad that we did.”

Another key factor in the win was that of the rebounding efforts put forth by the taller McDonough team that helped with second-chance points throughout the contest.

“I knew from scouting Central that its best players were the guards,” Tillotson said. “I thought that our post would have an advantage in rebounding, and it did.”

Central’s Marketa Salley almost single-handedly cut the McDonough lead down as she scored 14 fourth-quarter points, including eight of the 11 points in the 11-1 run.

However, the Lady Falcons fell just short in its bid for a play-of victory.

“We came out with a lackluster start,” Central first-year head coach Renee Jamison said. ” … We were unable to preserver until the end of the third quarter and into the fourth. This was a very disappointing and heart-breaking loss, I have to say.”

On Salley’s performance, Jamison added: “That is an average night for Marketa.”

Salley finished the contest with a game-high 22 points.

McDonough will now face conference opponent Calvert for the third time this season, as Calvert has won both of the previous contests.

“We have played Calvert twice this year,” Tillotson said, “so we know what they are capable of. They are an outstanding basketball team.”

Battle of the conference undefeated
Bragging rights, maybe. Confidence booster, quite possibly. Momentum heading into the state playoffs, definitely.

However you put it, the reasons for wanting to win the Prince George’s County basketball title stretch far and beyond what any one person may believe.

Yes, it secures bragging rights for one year, yes, it is a confidence booster, yes it may give you momentum, but there is much more to it.

Four teams will each vie for the title today at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School for the opportunity to call their team, Prince George’s County champions.

“It could definitely provide a little confidence booster,” Eleanor Roosevelt head coach Rod Hairston said of what a win could do, “especially against a good Largo team. [Largo head] coach Ball does a great job in getting those girls prepared and it is always a war when we play Largo.”

The opening game of a two-game set at Wise will begin with Hairston’s Roosevelt team in a contest with the Largo Lady Lions. Both teams played to undefeated conference seasons during the regular season in their respective conference which sets up for a highly-contested game to determine the county championship.

“The girls have been excited about this game all week,” Hairston said. “I did all I could do to keep them focused on the last three games [of the regular season] before tonight. They are really looking forward to it.”

Laurel boys looking for repeat
First-year head coach Antoine Gaither has led the Laurel Spartans boys’ basketball to this year’s Prince George’s County championship game.

In reaching this game, the Spartans will have the opportunity to win its second county title in as many years.

“We like to win every game on our schedule,” Gaither admitted, “but this is more of a bragging-rights game. Our main goal is to stay injury free heading into the playoffs.”

Laurel will meet the 3A/2A/1A champion Friendly Patriots who punched its ticket with a Friday-night victory over Gwynn Park.

“The globe expands now,” Friendly head coach Rob Garner explained after Friday night’s win. “Now, we are just not
playing for Ft. Washington. Now, we are not just playing for our family
and friends. We are now playing for the whole county. We are playing as
representatives of the entire 3A/2A/1A. … Winning the conference was
just one of our goals. We are going to go to Wise wanting to win the
ball game.”

Both teams come into the contest totting strong defenses with often high-octane offense. Something has to give which should make for a wonderful game to determine the boys’ champion.

“One of our goals we set during the pre-season in the fall was to win this game,” Gaither said. “No one expected us to be here, and we talked to the team about earning respect.”

The boys’ game will follow the girls’ tonight at Wise.
